Volunteer Role description
Project overview
Green Champions are Action 21’s advocates in the community for greener living, communicating to people and organisations about what they can do locally to live their lives more sustainably.
Principal Function of Volunteer
Green Champion projects come under one of our themes of Recycling, Energy, Transport, Education or Food & Allotments and can range from working in schools to engaging with community groups to creating an ethical consumer map. Volunteers can get involved in existing projects or they can be supported in developing their own project ideas.
Tasks and Activities
As a volunteer you may carry out some of the following activities, depending on your individual capabilities and preferences. This list is only a guide to the types of activities that may be required.
- Communicate effectively at various events to a wide range of people. This may include schools, community groups, farmers’ markets, parish councils and other instances that may be appropriate
- Help plan and deliver garden gang projects, restoring nature sites or creating green spaces.
- Give out information to the general public about sustainability issues and local resources that are available
- Deliver talks and presentations to various local groups, organisations and at local events
- Assist with delivery of activities relating to sustainability in local schools
- Work with community groups to help them take positive practical environmental action
- Help out on the Action 21 information stall at local community events, speaking to members of the public about Action 21’s projects and sustainability issues.

Skills/Qualifications/Experience sought
- Willing to engage with the public about green issues
- An interest in sustainability issues
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Enthusiasm for the role
- Willing to attend events as an advocate of Action 21
- An ability to work independently, although support will be provided by Action 21 staff and directors as appropriate

Training, Reviews & Support
General
- Registration session with Amy, the Volunteer Programme Manager to provide an overview of Action 21 and what volunteering on our projects involves. Also gives you a chance to ask any questions you may have.
- Project Induction with the appropriate member of Action 21 staff or director
- End of probation review session (after 4 weeks or sessions of volunteering; with Amy and/or Action 21 staff member as appropriate)
- 6 monthly review sessions with Amy
Job Specific Training
- There may be opportunities for specific training depending on the project.
- It is expected that the staff or director project supervisor will perform an informal mentor role for green champion volunteers
Expenses
You can claim back reasonable expenses for travel and other out of pocket volunteering expenses. How you go about claiming back these costs will be explained in more detail during your induction.
If you have the time to volunteer for a full day (7 hrs) we’ll even give you a free lunch!
